Sustainability Committee

The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) Sustainability Committee commissioned a multi-year study to investigate different fertility inputs that have the potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions from the production of barley. This study, across North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho, not only investigates the efficacy of these products, but also the feasibility and economic viability of these inputs in the production of high quality malting barley.

This multi-state research project explores how nitrogen fertilizer management can reduce Scope 3 emissions in barley production across Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota. Researchers are evaluating fertilizer sources, application rates, and nitrogen use efficiency to identify practices that maintain barley yield and malt quality while lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving sustainability throughout the supply chain.
This webinar highlights ongoing barley research across Saskatchewan, Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota focused on optimizing nitrogen management for malting barley. Researchers discuss split nitrogen applications, slow-release fertilizers, sustainability goals, yield performance, and protein management while exploring ways to improve nitrogen efficiency and reduce environmental impact across barley production systems.
