Grower representatives named to the AMBA Sustainability Committee

The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA), a trade organization representing end users of malting barley including maltsters, brewers, and distillers, has named six grower representatives to their newly formed Sustainability Committee. The committee was formalized in May 2024 and seeks to rally industry leaders around a core message and purpose to prove and improve the sustainable nature of the crop. It was recognized that in order to be successful, cooperation and alignment with the farmers that produce the barley would be critical.

AMBA has worked with various state grower groups and the National Barley Growers Association to identify representatives that could accurately ground-truth the work the group hopes to accomplish. In addition to continuing to support barley breeding and improvement efforts, the committee also plans to investigate alternative nitrogen sources and farming practices that can lessen the environmental impact of production.

The following individuals will serve in an advisory capacity on the AMBA Sustainability Committee, which meets next on Thursday, September 5th.

  • Matt Horlacher - Latah, WA
  • Paul Bradley - Garneill, MT
  • Scott Nelson - Lakota, ND
  • Ryan Hough - Barnesville, MN
  • Derek Heerslink - Alamosa, CO
  • Lucas Spratling - Raft River, ID
