AMBA seeking applicants for Technical Director contract role

The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA), which represents the interests of end users of malting barley including maltsters, brewers, distillers, and food processors, seeks an independent contractor to fulfill the role of Technical Director for the association. This work focuses on supporting their purpose to advance a resilient supply of quality malting barley. Primary duties entail supporting all associated efforts of the Quality Evaluation Program (QEP), an industry driven effort to support development of relevant barley varieties by U.S. public breeding programs.

  • Fully manage the QEP, including coordination of the subcommittee, to ensure relevant barley lines are brought into development to meet the needs of AMBA industry members. This entails fully supporting the Pilot Scale Evaluation program and developing strategies for industry to adopt successful lines.

  • Liaise with barley breeders to communicate trait needs and support collaboration among breeding programs and industry members. This entails regularly reviewing the Guidelines for Barley Breeders and staying abreast of industry trends and innovation within crop development.

  • Develop content and educational materials to increase understanding of genetic technologies, trait development, emerging needs of the industry, and other topics pertinent to barley improvement efforts supported by the organization.

  • Develop and administer a process for enhanced accountability of the investments made in barley research and development by the organization through their grant program. Ensure industry priorities are reflected in the investments and that results are returned and communicated.

AMBA seeks to commence this role March 1, 2026 and will prioritize awarding the contract to someone able to make a 24 month commitment. The approach and contract will be re-evaluated February 2028. The contractor is responsible for submitting timely invoices and will be compensated at a rate of $75/hour, NTE $70,200 in one 12 month period. A $3,000 travel stipend is provided annually to support travel expenses associated with contract work. The contractor will not be an employee of AMBA, but they will hold the affiliation of the organization and serve as a representative of the organization in relevant meetings and events. The contractor will also be fully integrated and expected to work in the association’s Google workspace (email, calendar, file sharing).
