AMBA contributes to brewing and malting science course

For over 30 years, the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) has contributed as a course instructor to the Master Brewers Association of the America’s Brewing and Malting Science Course. In this course, students benefit from the experience and wisdom of more than 20 subject matter experts (SMEs) focusing instruction on the technical side of the brewing and malting processes. Now taught in a hybrid format, students engage in coursework and group discussions online for six weeks, before a week of in-person and hands-on instruction.

The barley module of this course is led by Ashley McFarland, vice president and technical director of AMBA. The task was passed down by Scott Heisel, now AMBA president, who led instruction since the 1990s. Specific barley topics covered in the course include:

  • History and evolution of malting barley cultivation

  • Considerations for malting barley cultivation

  • Challenges to malting barley cultivation

  • Malting barley quality, improvement, and variety pipeline

  • Challenges to malting barley supply

The next Brewing and Malting Science course will begin online September 29th and will conclude with the in-person instruction the week of November 26th. Register today to secure your seat!
