Letter urges President Biden's administration to intervene on port operations

A broad coalition of organizations representing diverse agricultural and food supply chains, including the American Malting Barley Association, sent a letter to President Biden and his administration seeking intervention between the International Longshoremen's Association and the United States Maritime Alliance. The Longshoremen's labor agreement expires on September 30th, and if a new agreement is not met, it is likely all port operations along the East and Gulf Coasts will be suspended with great impact on the ag supply chain.

The coalition requested President Biden's intervention before a lockout or strike occurs to minimize the impact to U.S. agriculture and the economy. Approximately 40 percent of U.S. containerized agricultural exports move through the potentially impacted ports.
