Across most of the U.S., hot, dry conditions kept Fusarium head blight (FHB or scab) from becoming a major disease this growing season. In states where the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI) FHB Risk Tool predicted high risk, conditions either turned dry or fungicide applications helped mitigate infection by the causal fungus, Fusarium graminearum.
Isolated cases of FHB occurred where rainfall and/or high humidity coincided with heading and flowering. However, DON levels remained low in harvested grain. Overall, although drought and late-spring freezes reduced yields in some states, FHB did not significantly affect grain quality this season.
The USWBSI asked state experts to assess FHB during the 2026 growing season. Their regional reports are summarized in the FHB Impact Update that you can access on the USWBSI website.
