A significant function of the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) is to stay engaged and inform its members of policy and funding issues at the federal level that impact the barley industry. In order to accomplish this work, AMBA has long partnered and maintained relationships with key organizations in D.C. to ensure timely and relevant information on the issues impacting our members. In order to grow and strengthen these connections, AMBA has joined the National Coalition for Food and Agricultural Research (NCFAR).
NCFAR is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, consensus-based, and customer-led coalition that brings together food, agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and natural resource stakeholders to serve as a forum and unified voice supporting increased federal investment in USDA Research, Education, and Economics (USDA REE). Their goals align well with AMBA’s work to influence sound policy in the Farm Bill and federal funding for research and other agencies that support barley. Engagement with NCFAR allows AMBA to stay well-connected to matters in D.C., joining diverse but interconnected interests in food and agriculture.
Agricultural research returns $20 for every $1 invested. Working with coalitions, like NCFAR, allows the barley industry to more broadly carry that message in a time period that has seen rapid disinvestment in agricultural research, leading to a lack of competitiveness internationally. NCFAR is active on the Hill and is shepherding many causes that align with AMBA priorities and are supported by the National Barley Improvement Committee. AMBA looks forward to the future partnership with NCFAR and believes the investment will strengthen the voice and influence of barley in Congress.
