The National Barley Improvement Committee (NBIC) represents the U.S. barley community of growers, researchers, processors, users, and allied industries. The work of the NBIC seeks to secure both funding and favorable agricultural policies at the federal level. In recent history, its work has focused on the dominant end use of barley, for malting purposes, although increased interest in barley as a pet and human food ingredient prompted the addition of two new members that will represent their respective industries. JC Olson serves as program manager at Scoular, based in Jerome, Idaho. Olson has spent 13 years with the company in various roles, most recently, focusing on the construction and commissioning of a new wet fractionation plant for the manufacture of barley protein concentrate and concentrated barley syrup. He also works with Scoular’s Barley MVP program, which gives farmers resources to improve growing practices to meet the needs of their emerging and growing markets. JC had the chance to attend NBIC’s Hill visits in March 2023, and provided an invaluable industry perspective while visiting key Idaho Congressional offices. Tony Rosing works in grain origination and logistics for Anchor Ingredients Company, based in Fargo, North Dakota. Anchor Ingredients sources and supplies ingredients to the food and pet food industries, including barley. Although newly with Anchor, Rosing had 14 years of previous experience with Busch Ag Resources in West Fargo, so he understands the landscape of barley production very well. Although Tony was unable to attend the March 2023 Hill climb, we look forward to having him join us on future trips and know he will represent his industry in the Upper Midwest very well. The National Barley Improvement Committee seeks to have a diverse roster of participants so that all barley needs and interests are represented in our federal advocacy efforts. The group is also actively recruiting representation from the distilling and commercial malting industries. Please reach out to NBIC executive secretary, Ashley McFarland, if you have any interest in participating.
