July production report shows little change in forecasted barley crop

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released their July 10, 2026 Crop Production Report. Much of the data is based on initial estimates and forecasts and does not report all barley production states. Individual state level estimates will be published in the Small Grains 2026 Summary.

Production is forecast at 142 million bushels, up 1 percent from 2025. Based on conditions as of July 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 75.9 bushels per acre, down 4.1 bushels from last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 1.87 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 30, 2026, but up 6 percent from last year.

Ninety-one percent of the barley crop acreage had emerged by June 7, twelve percentage points ahead of last year and 10 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. By June 21, twenty percent of the barley crop had reached the headed stage, 5 percentage points ahead of last year and 6 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. By July 5, sixty percent of the barley crop had reached the headed stage, 9 percentage points ahead of last year and 8 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. On June 28, fifty-two percent of the Nation’s barley crop was rated in good to excellent condition, 9 percentage points above the same time last year.
