Five new members are joining the National Barley Improvement Committee, along with two members being re-elected. A robust slate of candidates were on the ballots with strong voter response. Thank you to the members now leaving the NBIC: Dr. Jamie Sherman, Dr. Brigid Meints, Judith Jolly, Dr. Heather Darby, and Dr. Eric Stockinger.

The elected seats of the NBIC are now held by:

  • Northwest: Dr. Joseph Jensen (Montana State University) and Dr. Jared Spackman (University of Idaho) elected and will join Dr. Margaret Krause (Oregon State University)
  • Southwest: Dr. Glen Fox (UC-Davis) elected
  • North Central: Dr. Thomas Baldwin (North Dakota State University) re-elected and Brian Schaetz (RahrBSG) elected and will join Dr. Brook Wilke (Michigan State University)

  • East: Dr. Nicholas Santantonio (Virginia Tech) elected

The National Barley Improvement Committee (NBIC) represents the U.S. barley community of growers, researchers, processors, users, and allied industries. The work of the NBIC seeks to secure both funding and favorable agricultural policies at the federal level. The most visible work of the NBIC is an annual legislative fly-in each spring.

Additional seats will be opening in 2026. Contact Ashley McFarland if you have interest in participating. Any individual working with barley in the U.S. is eligible, with the exception of federal employees.

You can learn more about the NBIC, participants, priorities, and work on the
AMBA website.
