Guidelines for Malting Barley Breeders

These guidelines provide malting barley breeders with targets for use in developing new barley lines. Some analytical parameters are listed as ideal minimums or maximums, and others as ranges. There is no one ideal malting barley variety for the end user. The industry utilizes a number of different varieties to meet the specifications of an end user or end product. Because environmental conditions impact malting quality parameters, breeders are encouraged to plant appropriate check varieties in allot their evaluation nurseries. AMBA can be contacted for a current list of appropriate check varieties.
